According to the Democratic Watchman weekly paper, construction on the Centre Hall train station and depot, now the Whistle Stop, began in 1884.  Because the Lewisburg and Tyrone railway was being extended from Spring Mills to Oak Hall, there was a need for a stop at Centre Hall. The building was completed and open for passengers and freight January 10, 1885.  In the early 1900’s the back third of the building was added.  A great variety of freight passed over the scales including farm machinery and livestock.

The Lewisburg and Tyrone RR became the Pennsylvania RR and later was purchased by the Penn Central RR.  Because business decreased after World War II, passenger service ended in the early 1950’s.  Freight service ended in 1972 after floods from Hurricane Agnus damaged some of the tracks and rail beds.  The Station was managed for generations by the Bradford family and in 1972, Bob and Ginny Bradford opened a craft shop in the station.  It later was the home of Shunk’s Kitchen & Bath, then Hubbord’s Chiropractic before becoming The Whistle Stop Restaurant on April 9, 1991.  The restaurant originally owned by Dick and Lucille Fuller of Spring Mills and managed by Ed and Marcia Gemperle. It is now owned by the Gemperles, who have maintained years of consistent quality food and service.
